Earth2Fan:

*
Earth2Fan begins sobbing *
Moderator:
Ok, Clancy, can you speak?
ClancyBrown:
Hello. Sorry Paul coulnd't be here, but
he's busy, and I'm not.
ClancyBrown:
Don't sob.
ClancyBrown:
What can I do for anybody?
ClancyBrown:
Let's talk about this movie.
Moderator:
Welcome!
Moderator:
Can you tell us a little something about
Starship Troopers?
ClancyBrown:
I don't know how much it cost, but it was
over $100 million.
ClancyBrown:
It's the 1959 Robert Heinlein novel brought
to the screen by Ed
Neumeire and Paul Verhoeven.
ClancyBrown:
Stars a whole pile of people.
ClancyBrown:
It is first and foremost a war movie.
Moderator:
<Bongo23> to <Moderator>: Did
he read the original book?
ClancyBrown:
Oh yeah. I read it a long time ago but really
didn't recall it well, and I read it when
I heard this was going on.
ClancyBrown:
I read a lot of Heinlein before and loved
rediscovering this one.
Moderator:
<ShadowDancer> to <Moderator>:
How close does STarship Troopers the movie
match Starship Troopers the book?
ClancyBrown:
Oh gee...you know...
ClancyBrown:
as close as Blade Runner is to Do Androids
Dream of Electric Sheep :-)
Moderator:
<Maigrey> to <Moderator>: -
Clancy do you enjoy being cast in Science
Fiction/Fantasy and which did you enjoy
more Earth 2, Highlander or Starship Troopers?
ClancyBrown:
Oh gosh...
ClancyBrown:
I enjoy being cast in good roles, and all
of those were good roles.
ClancyBrown:
I enjoyed them all for different reasons.l
ClancyBrown:
I had agreat time on ST...a lot of fun.
ClancyBrown:
I also had a very good time on Highlander,
and I spent great year doing E2.
Moderator:
<deanna> to <Moderator>: G'day
from Australia. I would just like to say
you have an extremely magnetic presence
on screen, and am looking forward to seeing
Starship Troopers. Any future plans to visit/work
down under?
ClancyBrown:
Boy, that'd be fun. I have friends there.
ClancyBrown:
But everytime I hear of a down under movie,
I'm not good enough for it :-)
Moderator:
<Earth2Kim> to <Moderator>:
Hi Clancy! In a recent Starlog article about
you they mentioned that there were rumors
about an Earth2 reunion movie. I hadn't
heard anything about that untill I read
the article. Can you tell us what you had
heard, if anything?
ClancyBrown:
No, I haven't heard of anythiing. I think
you probably misunderstood one of the questions
from Starlog.
Moderator:
<Israel> to <Moderator>: Mr.
brown, you do such a good job as Lex Luthor
on the animated Superman. How did you end
up getting the role?
ClancyBrown:
I said I would be interested in a moive,
but I dont' think there are any plans to
do it. But would I be there? Yeah, absolutely.
ClancyBrown:
I actually went in and auditioned as Superman
hoping to get that role because in animation
at least I was hoping to play the good guy.
ClancyBrown:
So I read for it, and they said that was
great, but could I read for the bad guy...
Moderator:
<Midge> to <Moderator>: Did
you improvise any of the Kurgan's part in
the Highlander movie? I think you did a
brilliant job.
ClancyBrown:
Yeah, not all of it, but a lot of it.
ClancyBrown:
Probably every scene had a little addition
to it, and Russel then just decided whether
or not to use it.
ClancyBrown:
You don't do a lot of improv with Sean Connery
:-)
Moderator:
<Enigma> to <Moderator>: Mr.
Clancy (Kurgan) Brown. Your part in Shawshank
Redemption as the evil prison guard. Did
you enjoy that role and did you base it
on any other characters you've played before?
ClancyBrown:
Yes. No. :-)
Moderator:
<Bongo23> to <Moderator>: Mr
brown, have you read The Forever War by
J Haldeman, and if so, how do you think
it compares to the story in Starship Troopers?
ClancyBrown:
I loved The Forever War.
ClancyBrown:
Somebody owns the rights to it...it's a
terrific book. It would be
ClancyBrown:
as difficult a translation to film as ST
is.
ClancyBrown:
How does it compare to ST? Both of them
absolutely are from their time.
ClancyBrown:
ST was written pre-Vietnam, and FW was written
post-Vietnam, but they are both perfectly
representative of their times.
ClancyBrown:
But boy can Joe Haldeman write. He rocks.
Moderator:
<Earth2Fan> to <Moderator>:
Hi, I was just wondering, if they *did*
do a reunion E2 movie, would you be interested
in doing it?
ClancyBrown:
Yes. Absolutely.
Moderator:
<human> to <Moderator>: Does
it bother you that Verhoeven and Numeier
seemed to add fascist elements to ST?
ClancyBrown:
No. I think tha'ts one of the brilliant
things about this film.
ClancyBrown:
You have Robert Heinlein, who was an American
during WWII.
ClancyBrown:
fighting the evil Nazis, even though he
wasn't able to fight, he actually got discharged
from the Navy because he was sick.
ClancyBrown:
Then you add Paul Verhoeven who grew up
in occupied Holland and saw the enemy every
day as a real flesh and blood presence.
ClancyBrown:
When you mix those 2 sensibilities, you're
bound to come up with a manifestation of
the most important event of both artist's
time.
ClancyBrown:
And I think it mixes just terrificly. I
think the message is clear.
ClancyBrown:
And make no mistake, Heinlein does not advocate
the world he created.
ClancyBrown:
Just as he does not advocate fascism.
Moderator:
<ursine> to <Moderator>: A question
to Clancy Brown: You've read the book and
know that the suits make a lot of the story
happen. Does the film find a way to compensate
for their not being there?
ClancyBrown:
But I think the movie uses it extraordiinarily
well to illuminate the book and history.
ClancyBrown:
Suits: That's a good question.
ClancyBrown:
The suits were a device in the book, I thought,
in order to
ClancyBrown:
make the point about the power of an individual
soldier.
ClancyBrown:
It was also the gee whiz techno gizmo thing
that he had to put in there becuase that
was in demand from SF fans of the time.
ClancyBrown:
The film loses nothing by not having the
suits.
ClancyBrown:
I don't think the suits would have added
that much to the movie except a lot of technical
and narrative problems, and I"m glad they're
gone :-)
Moderator:
<Brennen> to <Moderator>: What
makes you say that? He seemed to be generally
in favor of the ST government.
ClancyBrown:
No, if you read the book again, he says
that that system came to be because of the
liberal system of the early '60s and '70s,
which was the direction that Heinlein saw
everything moving.
ClancyBrown:
So if anyting I think it was saying if we
continue to move this direction, the pendulum
is going to swing back, and it's going to
swing back real hard.
Moderator:
<Earth2Kim> to <Moderator>:
Are you working on any projects now that
you could tell us about?
ClancyBrown:
Sure...
ClancyBrown:
I'm doing some episodes of ER.
ClancyBrown:
With an old college chum, Laura Innis, and
ClancyBrown:
one of the executive producers of Earth
2 is now an exec on ER, so they called me,
and I said, yeah, absolutely for friends.
ClancyBrown:
It's always nice to work with and for friiends.
Moderator:
<Bongo23> to <Moderator>: As
a Doctor or some sinsister Medical Company
rep?
ClancyBrown:
Both :-)
Moderator:
About Starship: any in-jokes or odd details
that sharped-eyed viewers should keep an
eye out for?
ClancyBrown:
The prisoner about to be executed in one
of the news feeds is the screenwriter.
ClancyBrown:
The man who says "The only good bug is a
dead bug." is John Davison, one of the producers.
Moderator:
<Earth2Fan2> to <Moderator>:
Were there a lot of special effects in ST?
Was it hard to react to some scenes?
ClancyBrown:
There's more special F/X in this film than
any other film to date. It is a brand new
paradime for effects and CGI.
ClancyBrown:
Somehow I escaped haviing do deal with any
of them :-)
Moderator:
<Enigma> to <Moderator>: Did
you enjoy your part in Pet Semetary II?
I don't know if you've noticed this but
you always seem to play bad guys in your
movies.
ClancyBrown:
No, I haven't noticed :-) None of those
guys are bad buys, they're just misunderstood
:-)
ClancyBrown:
PSII was a bunch of people just having a
good time.
Moderator:
<Earth2Fan> to <Moderator>:
I saw the con tape of NewpacifiCon '96,
if there's another con, would you go to
that one, too, if you weren't otherwise
occupied?
ClancyBrown:
Sure. But you know, they should try to fold
the Earth 2 con into some other con. It's
really just too much trouble to be a stand
alone. Unite and conquer :-)
Moderator:
<Nighthawk> to <Moderator>:
Clancy you seemed to be having a ball playing
the Kurgan in Highlander ,Was it fun???
ClancyBrown:
Yep :-)
ClancyBrown:
I've forgotten all the bad parts, it was
so long ago.
Moderator:
For those who've come late, please /msg
your questions to Moderator.
Moderator:
<ursine> to <Moderator>: Is
Mr Brown planning on doing any new episodes
of "Batman: Than Animated Series"?
ClancyBrown:
I havnen't been asked. I think they're the
same folks who do Superman, so unless Lex
starts giving Batman a hard time, I dont'
think I'll be doing that show.
Moderator:
<Earth2Kim> to <Moderator>:
Do you enjoy the online world? What sort
of things do you like to do while online?
ClancyBrown:
I do enjoy it, but my time is limited on
it, and I usually use it strictly for business.
ClancyBrown:
I' ve been meanting to try to get to certain
chat rooms and people are nice enough to
e-mail me, but I'm usually on just to take
care of business.
Moderator:
<ursine> to <Moderator>: Is
Mr Brown planning on doing any new episodes
of "Batman: Than Animated Series"?
Moderator:
ooops
Moderator:
<Earth2Fan> to <Moderator>:
My little brother loves your role on that
Superman show. I was wondering, which do
you like more, acting or doing cartoon voices?
Or is it all even?
ClancyBrown:
It's all the same to me. It's all acting.
Moderator:
<Earth2Fan> to <Moderator>:
Hi Clancy, this is a question about Earth2,
Where did you think the relationship between
your character and Devon Adair was going,
if anywhere? = )
ClancyBrown:
Oh, golly, I don't know...
ClancyBrown:
I did have an idea what was being planned...
ClancyBrown:
for the next season, but it's almost cruel
to reveal that since there is no next season
:-)
Moderator:
<JeffMason> to <Moderator>:
Has there ever been talk of doing a Buckaroo
Banzai sequel? Would you want to be Rawhide
again?
ClancyBrown:
Yeah, sure. I haven't heard anything about
a BB sequel.
ClancyBrown:
I'm pretty sure everybody would do it. I
think Jeff Goldblum is probably more expensive
than he was before, but I think we all still
like each other. I don't know if it will
happen.
Moderator:
<benzibox> to <Moderator>: Was
the final battle sequence of Highlander
done on top of the Real Siver Cup Studios
building ? I get the chills everytime I
pass that place.
ClancyBrown:
Some of it. Some of it was done on a soundstage.
ClancyBrown:
Some of it we actually climbed up on those
big red letters and smacked away at each
other.
Moderator:
<Israel> to <Moderator>: Did
you manage to work with Mark Hamill at all
when you were doing the animated "World's
Finest"?
ClancyBrown:
Yes.
ClancyBrown:
And I'v eworked with him on Johnny Quest
as well.
ClancyBrown:
And he's easily the best movie star voice
over artist I've ever worked with.
ClancyBrown:
He's so good at it, and a real nice guy.
It was great fun to work with him.
Moderator:
<Earth2Kim> to <Moderator>:
Clancy! Please tell us the idea for the
Devon/Danziger relationship!We're dying
here! =)
ClancyBrown:
(Laughing) Okay.
ClancyBrown:
The idea was that was Devon was actually
dying, that the planet was actually rejecting
her specifically.
ClancyBrown:
And that she knew this somehow, and through
the Terrians requested that all of her...
ClancyBrown:
essence, her memory, her emotion, all of
her experience, be implanted or transferred
or copied into Danziger, and Danziger would
then be responsible for her well being.
ClancyBrown:
This is all very desperate in the early
goings, and dramatic.
ClancyBrown:
But then she lives.
ClancyBrown:
And she knows one person is walkign around
that knows her inside and out :-)
ClancyBrown:
And then it just depended on how well Debra
and I got along to see what happened...
Moderator:
<Earth2Fan2> to <Moderator>:
Does any one of your characters stand out
for you for some reason?
ClancyBrown:
Um...
ClancyBrown:
Boy...
ClancyBrown:
They all do in some way.
ClancyBrown:
I don't know...
ClancyBrown:
The next one maybe stands out the most :-)
Moderator:
<ursine> to <Moderator>: You've
read a fair bit of science fiction and fantasy.
If there is one work you could dvelope for
yourself what would it be?
ClancyBrown:
I don't know for myself, but I'd love to
see Stranger in a Strange Land attempted.
ClancyBrown:
Just about anything by Orson Scott Card
I'd liked to see.
Moderator:
Two similar questions:
Moderator:
<Jon1> to <Moderator>: Clancy,
with all of your successes, do you feel
that you get enough time for your own private
life?
Moderator:
<Earth2Fan> to <Moderator>:
How's your family been doing?
ClancyBrown:
They're doing quite well, thank you very
much for asking. My daughter Rose just turned
2.
ClancyBrown:
When I don't have time, I feel like I don't
every have enough time, and when I do have
time, I feel like I can't get enough, so
I don't know really how to answer that.
Moderator:
<Maigrey> to <Moderator>: The
sword you used in Highlander was humongous...was
it heavy? How big was it?
ClancyBrown:
I dont' know how big it was, four-and-a-half
feet maybe. T he stunt swords we had were
aluminum, so they werent' heavy.
ClancyBrown:
And the spiffy shiny steel sword, the hero's
sword, was not as heavy as you might think.
ClancyBrown:
I sparred with it a few times and I could
handle it one-handed (the Kurgens's sword).
Moderator:
<Earth2Kim> to <Moderator>:
There is another e2 convention in the works...
You said that they should collaborate with
another fandom perhaps; any one in particular
you would like to suggest?
ClancyBrown:
Ha ha...Star Trek :-)
ClancyBrown:
I don't know.
ClancyBrown:
Somebody you can control :-) I have no idea.
I don't know how those things work. It's
not up to me.
Moderator:
<Blackwolf> to <Moderator>:
Did you have to learn sword fighting?
ClancyBrown:
Yeah, a little.
Moderator:
<bigragu2> to <Moderator>: Where
you ever asked to do any of the Highlander
TV.
ClancyBrown:
They approached me a couple of times, but
I never saw a script. I never got a real
offer.
ClancyBrown:
Plus I don't really think that would be
right. I think Adrian Paul has really made
that his own show, and it shouldn't be confused
with the movie. He's done a terrific job
I think.
Moderator:
<benzibox> to <Moderator>: Have
you done any writing yourself?
ClancyBrown:
Any writing? Um, I wrote an article about
my daughter and my visit to Dodger's Stadium
this year for a newspaper.
Moderator:
<Earth2Fan2> to <Moderator>:
In your different characters, I've noticed
that your voice changes to suit each character.
Is it hard to change your voice for that
or is it something that comes naturally?
ClancyBrown:
It's part of the process of acting, that
I do anyway. Does it come naturally? It
comes naturally from the process.
ClancyBrown:
Is it hard? For who? For you, yes. For me,
no :-)
Moderator:
<Jeff> to <Moderator>: could
you tell us a little about your character
in the ST movie
Moderator:
Please send your final questions for Clancy
to Moderator now.
ClancyBrown:
It's Sergeant Zim, and he's the drill instructor,
but if you really want to know, go to a
chat room and have your own discussion aboutit,
because fans of the book will probably be
a lot more articulate than I could probably
be :-)
Moderator:
<Earth2Fan3> to <Moderator>:
Clancy-How did you feel when Earth 2 was
canceled?
ClancyBrown:
Very disappointed.
ClancyBrown:
Not particulary surprised, but very disappointed.
Moderator:
<Enigma> to <Moderator>: Do
you hate doing scenes of simulated violence
like in "Shawshank Redemption" when you
beat to death a prisoner and then shoot
one 3 times?
ClancyBrown:
It's just something that's in the script.
It's part of the job. If I hated to do something,
and act of voilence, then I probably wouldnt'
take the job.
ClancyBrown:
There have been a couple of ones that came
close. But it's never any fun to perpetrate.
Moderator:
<Digger> to <Moderator>: What
projects do you have coming up now that
the 2 movies are done?
ClancyBrown:
ST is coming out in a week. Flubber is coming
out Thanksgiving. I'm working on ER right
now. There's a TV movie called "The Patron
Saint of Liars" with Dana Delaney.
ClancyBrown:
And right now I'm looking for a job :-)
Moderator:
<Israel> to <Moderator>: Is
there anything you haven't yet done in your
career that you would like to?
ClancyBrown:
Heh heh. Darth Vader :-)
Moderator:
<Earth2Kim> to <Moderator>:
You did a movie, Female Perversions. (Which
I haven't seen - only heard about.) Want
to explain why you did it? Just because
you liked the role?
ClancyBrown:
A great offbeat very smart script.
ClancyBrown:
That unfortunately did not translate well
to film.
Moderator:
Any final thoughts for the group?
ClancyBrown:
Go see the movie, and Happy Halloween. Go
see the movie twice if you can :-) More
if you have to.
Moderator:
Thanks for taking the time out to chat with
us. Perhaps we'll be able to do another
chat in early 1998 when Earth2 debuts on
Sci-Fi Channel!
ClancyBrown:
Great idea. Great idea!
ClancyBrown:
Keep those cards and letters coming in,
E2 fans. (Not to me, to the Sci-Fi Channel
:-)

That's the last official chat of the day.
